Moore Continues His Winning Streak With Two Podium Finishes At Knockhill
Added Thursday 08 September 2011
Rounds 13 and 14 of the Ginetta Junior Championship took place at Knockhill Circuit in Scotland last weekend and proved to be a watershed moment for 16 year old rookie Struan Moore as he delivered a pair of sensational race drives. Struan had never seen the track before arriving in Scotland earlier in the week, and with two days of productive testing he quickly showed a lot of promise for the upcoming race weekend.
Struan qualified in 4th place for race 1 of the weekend. He held that position for the first four laps of the race, moving into 3rd, then trading fastest lap times with the other leaders until he moved into 2nd place on lap six behind his teammate and Championship leader Seb Morris. As a dream one-two for Struan’s Hillspeed team looked likely, and just as Struan set a new lap record by recording the fastest lap of the race, the Safety Car had to be deployed whilst a damaged car was removed from the circuit. Following the restart, Struan slipped to 3rd place and notched up his second podium finish in a row following his 3rd place at Snetterton just a few weeks ago.
The second race of the weekend took place on the Sunday and with back-to-back podiums already achieved Struan’s confidence was running high. He started from 6th on the grid in front of 30,000 spectators and the ITV4 live coverage audience. The racing thrilled the crowds with lots of overtaking and wheel to wheel action. Struan was one of the fastest drivers on the track, recording a number of successive ‘fastest laps’ throughout the race. Eventually it came down to a battle between three cars in 3rd place, but Struan eventually broke free to take 2nd place and set about chasing the leader. At this point, Struan put his rear mirror down to focus completely on chasing the car in front. He recorded another fastest lap and secured the overall lap record for the Ginetta Junior Championship before reaching the chequered flag in a sensational 2nd place.
Struan comments:
“It was a very good weekend, finishing third yesterday and one better today is great. It was a bit of a dogfight between a few of us for quite a few laps, but I managed to break clear and after that it was all ok. I’m looking forward to the next circuit now, and to achieving more podiums.”
Struan’s manager, James Walker, had this to say:
“All our hard work is now starting to come to fruition. These 3 podium results mean so much to Struan, and also to me. I felt really proud watching him cross the line and stand on the podium. However, it’s easy to think that we’ve made it and the work can stop. Struan now needs to work even harder to make the next step to qualifying on pole and winning his races. He knows he’s capable of doing it, so that’s what we’ll be aiming for at Rockingham in a few week’s time.”
Hillspeed team principal Richard Ollerenshaw commented:
“Struan has been in outstanding form, he really is becoming a major force in the Championship and a first win for him can’t be too far away.”
